Prior to joining the University, he had served in various capacities in the Zimbabwe Republic police which included administration, investigations and prosecution. He had been recruited into the police force as part of a graduate executive recruit training programme soon after independence. At the time he left the police he had risen to become the member-in-charge of a police station.

In 1998 Mr. Tarambiwa was promoted to his current post of Chief Security Officer. During his service in this position, Mr. Tarambiwa transformed the security systems on campus, steered the Security Department through the turbulent times when violent demonstrations were common on campus and oversaw the growth and development of the department to what it is today. Mr. Tarambiwa graduated from the University of Zimbabwe in 1982 and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
