Welcome to the Faculty of Social Studies (FSS). The faculty has a long and distinguished reputation of teaching, research and community service as well as producing highly qualified and capable individuals.

Being the largest faculty at the University of Zimbabwe, it comprises eight research oriented departments, and a student population of about 2 672. Being a vibrant and sundry social science community, student mentorship; interaction with stakeholders; participation in national, regional and international events; multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder approach; and entrepreneurial spirit are the core principles in the Faculty. Underpinned by these principles, the faculty has been playing a significant role not only in the university but in the country and beyond.

We provide a diversity of programmes and courses so as to allow students’ flexibility with career choices and advancement. The programmes are internationally oriented in their content and through international student exchange programmes within the various departments. The FSS prepares students for rewarding careers and leadership roles in areas such as economic development, social work, politics, international relations, public administration, demography and social development. We do not merely produce students who are able to respond effectively to the demands of the world of work and dynamic societal changes, but students who are able to proffer evidence-based solutions. As such, the Faculty continues to make important contributions to national, regional and global development.

Our faculty does not only provide the numerical strength in terms of the highest number of professors and PhD holders, but highly committed towards the successful development of students and scholarship. Our professors and lecturers are experts in their fields, consistently sought by the government, businesses and non-governmental organisations to provide cutting-edge perspectives, innovative discoveries and solutions to pressing social, economic and political problems. The departments and centres in the Faculty focus on diverse and complex questions regarding various social, economic, political and infrastructure problems facing societies. We engage in both disciplinary and interdisciplinary teaching and collaborative research to respond to the dynamic needs of stakeholders in wide ranging contexts.

My administration, which started in January 2015, has not only maintained the vision, mission and the standard set by my predecessors but has improved on them. The Faculty remains the pinnacle of excellence in social science teaching, training, research and policy advocacy in Zimbabwe. It continues to capacitate the diverse stakeholders to make meaningful contributions towards sustainable development through basic and applied social science teaching, research and training. The Faculty is undergoing transformation to expand its contribution to society, not only through the long established areas of focus but innovation, entrepreneurship and unprecedented intellectual leadership. The Faculty continues to record remarkable progress due to the following activities that are difficult to quantify: commitment and passion of Faculty staff and students; teaching pursuits; research opportunities; collaborations; awards; and participation in community and national service.
