UZ Signs Training Pact with China’s HUAWEI Technologies

-Partnership provides for the establishment of high-end Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) talent development programmes at the University of Zimbabwe;

-The programmes will focus on up-skilling and re-skilling initiatives aimed at creating world class ICT graduates and professionals.

The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has partnered HUAWEI Technologies, Zimbabwe Ltd in a joint training programme that seeks to promote ICT education, research and innovation through upgrading and enhancement of students’ ICT skills.   The partnership will be implemented through HUAWEI Technologies’ Huawei Authorized Network Academy (HANA) that uses the popular university-enterprise cooperation model in course development, training and certification.  Under the terms of the cooperation, HUAWEI will provide student scholarships, equipment, software and courses about several ICT products and solutions. The University of Zimbabwe will provide a location for the establishment of the training centre as well as teachers who will be trained by HUAWEI to provide the courses to students. The HANA project provides the first step towards a more structural cooperation between the UZ and HUAWEI Technologies in which both parties will share knowledge in order to create new and innovative products and solutions in the ICT domain with the possibility that the parties will set up other joint ICT related training and research activities in the future.

Officiating at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding underwriting the collaboration, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe, Professor Levi Nyagura expressed excitement at the reality of working with HUAWEI, a leading global technology brand. Professor Nyagura  indicated that the partnership with HUAWEI was an important recognition and demonstration of the University’s leadership of the higher education sector in Zimbabwe as well as its central role in the advancement of innovative interventions that were key to the socio-economic development of the nation, region and beyond.  Speaking at the same ceremony, the Managing Director of HUAWEI Technologies, Zimbabwe Ltd, Mr Yang Jiangtao also expressed excitement with the partnership, noting that the collaboration between UZ and HUAWEI had the potential to build a better connected world and contribute to the future of the ICT industry in Zimbabwe.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding held on 22 November 2016 at the University of Zimbabwe, was witnessed by the Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Huang Ping, senior members of the Chinese Embassy, senior government officials and the University of Zimbabwe.
